CF&I STEEL CORPORATION
CANON DOLOMITE QUARRY
File No. M-77-376
ANNUAL REPORT to the MLRD
September 1988 -September 1989
(1) CF&I (Fountain Sand & Gravel) operated the Canon Dolomite Quarry during the report
period, however, no additional acres were disturbed. All active mining operations are
restricted to areas already disturbed by past mining. No additional acres, previously
undisturbed, will be disturbed during the remaining life of the quarry.
(2) Approximately 7 cres of the disturbed areas west of the active quarry area were graded,
covered with tops it substitute material, and seeded.
(3) All of the inactive quarry areas, approximate) ~5 cres, have been graded and
reseeded. In addition the major road cuts were graded an seeded in 1986. Because no
topsoil was available for many of these areas, revegetation success has been sporadic.
CF&I is currently using canal sediments, when available, as a topsoil replacement on many
of the areas with the poorest soil conditions. As these areas were covered with
sediments, the approved seed mixture was applied.
(4) The species planted include Crested & Thickspike wheatgrass, Sideoats Grama,
Russian Wildrye, Indian Ricegrass, Fourwing Saltbush Palmer Penstemon and Yellow
Sweetclover as per the approved seed mixture.
(5) The canal sediments are rich in organic material. Approximately 3 to 6 inches of the
material was deposited.
(6) The revegetation success has been sporadic. Much of this is due to the general lack
of organic material in the ground, and low moisture conditions. Marked improvements
were noted last year after application of compost. Currently CF&I is trying canal sediments
to condition the soil, however because of the limited availability of this material it will take
some years to cover all of the areas which require such treatment.
(7) Mining will continue at a very reduced rate for some years to come, however all future
mining will be restricted to those areas previously disturbed by mining. No undisturbed
areas will be affected by future mining.
(8) This report is current as of September 1, 1989.
