Somerset Mining Company
1994 Annual Hydrologic Report
stations SC-1, SC-2 and SC-3 per Note 4. The monitoring equipment
for these wells is so bulky that a motorized vehicle must be able
' to access the well sites for monitoring. Snow and ice makes the
collection of samples difficult if not dangerous. Because of the
snow and ice conditions in January and February, field parameters
' were not measured.
In March and April the monthly field parameters were measured and
in March the full suite of groundwater parameters prior to
' Technical Revision No. 20 was sampled and analyzed. In June,
September, and December stations SC-1, SC-2 and SC-3 were monitored
for field parameters and in June and December the full suite of
' groundwater parameters after Technical Revision No. 20 was
analyzed. In December the monitoring equipment was hand carried
from the highway to the well sites because of the snow and ice
' conditions. The water level in SC-1 has been in the range from
6011 feet to 6028 feet for the past three years. The water level
in SC-2 has been in the range from 6058 feet to 6082 feet for the
past three years. The water level in SC-3 has been in the range
' from 6069 feet to 6088 feet for the past three years.
Spring monitoring points SP-1 through SP-11 are designed to monitor
' the springs and correlate the data with the prior monitoring data
presented on pages 2.04-29vii through 2.04-29xvii of the permit
document. One year prior to retreat mining under Springs 1 through
6, monitoring will recommence and the data will be interpreted and
' correlated. A significant change in the quality or quantity of
flow from the springs after retreat mining would indicate that the
mine may be having an impact on the springs. Springs 1 through 6
' are located above the mine workings and are separated from the mine
by over 2,000 feet of overburden.
' The spring monitoring data, Springs 1 through 11, interpretation
and correlation with past monitoring was submitted with the 1992,
1993, and here with the 1994 annual hydrologic reports. No mining
will be performed within the angle of draw of Springs 1 through 6
' or Springs 10 and 11 until the baseline monitoring and
interpretation of the data is complete and approved by the
Division. Baseline monitoring was completed in June 1994.
' Interpretation and correlation of the data was submitted to the
Division on September 15, 1994.
' During the 1992 review of Permit Revision No. 2, the Division
required SMC to conduct an on-the-ground survey of the surface area
within the proposed Sanborn East Tract permit boundary to verify
and/or update the Western Slope Carbon spring and seep data
' previously submitted. Also, the Division required a monitoring
program for the eleven springs monitored previously by the Hawk's
Nest Mine.
8
