' Somerset Mining Company
1994 Annual Hydrologic Report
These stations were monitored monthly. No flow was recorded for
the stations except for HN-1 Hawksnest Creek, which had flow in
' March, April, and May. The monthly field parameters were measured
and the full suite of surface water parameters prior to Technical
Revision No. 20 was sampled and analyzed in March and April.
' Outfall 011 is the mine water discharge from the Sanborn Creek
Mine, which discharges into Sanborn Creek. Prior to Technical
Revision No. 18, Sanborn Creek was monitored above the mine
' discharge as station S-1 and below the mine discharge as station S-
2 on a monthly basis for field parameters and the full suite of
surface water parameters. With no flow in Sanborn Creek above the
mine discharge most of the time, monitoring below the mine
discharge is the same as monitoring the mine discharge, which is
done weekly for the NPDES requirements. Technical Revision No. 18
' change the monthly monitoring at S-2 to monitoring only when there
is flow at S-1, and added monitoring Outfall 011 quarterly for the
full suite of surface water parameters. Technical Revision No. 18
was effective November 20, 1993.
' Apparently, there was some communication problems to the operating
level at the mine because of possible confusion with the quarterly
' requirements of the discharge permit. The full suite of surface
water parameters was not analyzed for the 4th quarter of 1993 and
the 1st quarter of 1994. All parameters that were analyzed have
been presented in the appendix. To add to the confusion, Outfall
011 was reclassified as groundwater by Technical Revision No. 20.
For the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 1994, the full suite of surface
water parameters was analyzed, but not the full suite of
groundwater parameters. When the error was discovered during the
4th quarter of 1994, clarification was requested from the Division
as to which was required.
' While waiting for clarification, the 4th quarter 1994 sample was
analyzed for both the full suite of surface water parameters and
the full suite of groundwater parameters. All data available have
' been presented in the appendix. SMC will monitor Outfall 011 for
.the full suite of groundwater parameters quarterly for 1995, as
required by Technical Revision No. 20.
' During 1994, MSHA granted approval to use the idle C-Seam workings
as a sump. This has increased the retention time to settle out the
t suspended solids from the mine discharge water. Weekly monitoring
of Outfall 011 for the discharge permit requirements has shown
continued compliance with the total suspended solids effluent
limitation.
1 The aquatic impairment study field work was completed in 1994, with
the final report due January 31, 1995.
