• RESULTS
Data trom the 1996 revegetation monitoring studies at the Seneca II Mine are presented in
Tables 1 through 21 contained in Appendix 1. The list of plant species observed during these
studies (reclaimed and reference areas) are included in Table 22 in Appendix 2. Seed mixes
applied on areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in years 1981 through 1993 are included for
reference in Appendix 3. Site data from sample transects (orientation, slope, aspect, and
initials of samplers) are included as Table 23 in Appendix 4. Photographs of representative
locations within the reclaimed areas sampled in 1996, as well as photographs of the Mountain
Brush and Sagebrush reference areas are included in Appendix 5. Graphic depiction of
summaries of vegetation data, precipitation, and total degree days are presented in Figures 1
through 10 of this report, starting on page 35.
In the following descriptions, species that were encountered quantitatively (i.e. "hit" by a
sample point) are described first for a particular tifeform. Species listed as "also present"
were not hit but were present within one meter to either side of the sample transect.
• 1989 Reclaimed Areas (Photographs 1 through 4)
v r (Table 1)
Introduced perennial cool season grass was the dominant life form in this unit with 33.3
percent of total vegetation cover. Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium)
accounted for most of this but orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) was also important.
Native perennial cool season grasses averaged 20.9 percent of total vegetation cover.
Agassiz bluegrass (Poa agassizensis) accounted for most of this. Introduced annual grass
averaged 4.9 percent of total vegetation cover. Japanese brome (Bromus iaoonicus) and
cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum) accounted for nearly all of this average.
Introduced perennial (orbs averaged 29.2 percent of total vegetation cover. Alfalfa
(Medicago saliva) accounted for most of this but titer milkvetch (Astragalus titer) was
also important. Native perennial forbs averaged 3.8 percent of total vegetation cover.
Introduced annual and biennial forbs averaged 7.0 percent of total vegetation cover.
Twolobe speedwell (Pocilla biloba) accounted for most of this average. Yellow sweetclover
•
9
