' San Luis Mine • Phase n, Raise I Design Report
' within most of the soundings which appears to represent a slimes or slime-rich layer which may be
saturated or very nearly so. A similar layer was noted over the 33-35 ft depth interval in the two
deeper, southern CPT probes, but was notably absent in the northern probes. A report summarizing
' the results of the CPT probes in contained in Appendix B.
2.3 piezometers
As per the Amendment, a series of five vibrating wire piezometers were installed at the base of the
Phase I embankment immediately above the liner. These piezometers were installed to monitor
phreatic conditions within the embankment in order to confirm that the structure remains drained
' as designed.
Piezometer readings were recorded on a periodic basis during initial operations and on a monthly
' basis since December, 1992. These readings result in negative pore water pressures for four of the
five piezometers which indicate the lack of saturated conditions in the embankment. However,
' temperature readings obtained from the piezometers indicate variations as great as 8.4°C (47°F) for
an individual piewmeter and 5.1 °C (41 °F) between piezometers monitored on the same date. These
temperature fluctuations are inconsistent with burial deep in the embankment. Therefore, the
piezometers do not appear to be functioning properly and the data cannot be used with reliability.
' 3.0 F.MBANIQIIENT DESIGN
' The design of the first embankment raise is consistent with the conceptual raise dtsign presented in
the Amendment. The raise will be constructed using upstream construction methods to increase the
' embankment crest elevation from 8590 to 8605 ft. Drawings 14719-101 and 14719-102 depict the
embankment raise in plan and profile.
' As shown on the Drawings, the raise will have a downstream slope of 3H:1 V, an upstrrarrt slope
of 2.SH:1V and a crest width of 30 ft. The downstream tce of the raise will ibe located at the
centerline of the existing embankment crest to create a IS ft wide bench at this location. The
' upstream portions of the raise will be founded on tailings which are anticipated to be at elevation
8570 at the time of raise construction.
As per the Amendment, the raise will be constructed as a loosely compacted, horgogenous earthfill
structure utilizing sandy gravel and gravelly sand inorganic soils selectively borrowed from on site
' sources. Where constructed directly on tailings, a geotextile filter fabric will underlie the raise fill.
July 13, 1993 q SRK Project No. 14719
