1111111111111111111 r <br /> <br />1986 Reclamation Report <br />Genstar Gypsum Products Company <br />•COaldale Quarry <br />...~ ~, <br />~_ <br />SeP 2 91986 <br />•'.f Lit! r <br />Reclamation efforts this year were concentrated on five different sites; <br />Iron Hill (4.3 acres), Zinc Hill (4.5 acres), Gold Hill (1.1 acres), Copper <br />Hill (.75 acres) for a total of 11.4 acres (See Map). Besides these areas <br />much weeding, mulching, and general maintenance was done thru-out all the <br />reclaimed areas. <br />There was no Phase I (site preparation) work done this year due to new dump <br />sites being added to thru-out the summer. <br />Phase II (Planting, Seeding, Fertilizing, Mulching) <br />Phase II work began in April with the planting of 100 Blue Spruce (Picea <br />pungens), and 350 Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) tree seedlings and 100 <br />bare root shrubs as follows: <br />24 Three Leaf Sumac (Rhus trilobata) <br />24 Squaw Currant (gibes cereum) <br />24 Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) <br />29 Mountain Snowberry (Symphoricarpus oreophilus) <br />4 Antelope Bitterbrush (Purshia tridentate) <br />Tree seedlings were purchased from Colorado State Forest Services through <br />the County Extension Office. Shrub species were from Pleasant Avenue Nursery, <br />Buena Vista, Colorado. <br />The shrub species are all Coaldale progeny, seeds and/or cuttings picked <br />from the mine area in the fall of 1985. <br />At the end of May and into the first two weeks of June much of the same <br />crew planted 738 plants, 80~ of which were planted on Iron Hill. The other <br />20~ were divided equally between Zinc hill and Gold hill. The species and <br />number of the 738 plants are as follows: <br />128 Four-wing Saltbush (Atriplex canescens) <br />128 Winterfat (Ceratoides Janata) <br />96 Three Leaf Sumac (Rhus trilobata) <br />96 Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) <br />98 Mountain snowberry (Symphoricarpus oreophilus) <br />64 Squaw Currant (gibes cereum) <br />64 Fringed Sage (Artemisia frigida) <br />64 Crown Vetch (COronilla varia) <br />At the end of June one acre on Copper hill and the area around the crusher <br />? pit were seeded with yellow Sweet Clover (Melilotus officinalis) at a rate <br />. of 90 lbs per acre. Wheat hay mulch was then spread on top at a rate of <br />2000 lbs per acre for water retention. At about the same time the west <br />end of Iron hill was broadcast seeded with a grass seed mix at a rate of <br />40 lbs per acre.
