Reclamation efforts this year were concentrated on five different sites;
Iron Hill (4.3 acres), Zinc Hill (4.5 acres), Gold Hill (1.1 acres), Copper
Hill (.75 acres) for a total of 11.4 acres (See Map). Besides these areas
much weeding, mulching, and general maintenance was done thru-out all the
reclaimed areas.
There was no Phase I (site preparation) work done this year due to new dump
sites being added to thru-out the summer.
Phase II (Planting, Seeding, Fertilizing, Mulching)
Phase II work began in April with the planting of 100 Blue Spruce (Picea
pungens), and 350 Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) tree seedlings and 100
bare root shrubs as follows:
24 Three Leaf Sumac (Rhus trilobata)
24 Squaw Currant (gibes cereum)
24 Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus)
29 Mountain Snowberry (Symphoricarpus oreophilus)
4 Antelope Bitterbrush (Purshia tridentate)
Tree seedlings were purchased from Colorado State Forest Services through
the County Extension Office. Shrub species were from Pleasant Avenue Nursery,
Buena Vista, Colorado.
The shrub species are all Coaldale progeny, seeds and/or cuttings picked
from the mine area in the fall of 1985.
At the end of May and into the first two weeks of June much of the same
crew planted 738 plants, 80~ of which were planted on Iron Hill. The other
20~ were divided equally between Zinc hill and Gold hill. The species and
number of the 738 plants are as follows:
128 Four-wing Saltbush (Atriplex canescens)
128 Winterfat (Ceratoides Janata)
96 Three Leaf Sumac (Rhus trilobata)
96 Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus)
98 Mountain snowberry (Symphoricarpus oreophilus)
64 Squaw Currant (gibes cereum)
64 Fringed Sage (Artemisia frigida)
64 Crown Vetch (COronilla varia)
At the end of June one acre on Copper hill and the area around the crusher
? pit were seeded with yellow Sweet Clover (Melilotus officinalis) at a rate
. of 90 lbs per acre. Wheat hay mulch was then spread on top at a rate of
2000 lbs per acre for water retention. At about the same time the west
end of Iron hill was broadcast seeded with a grass seed mix at a rate of
40 lbs per acre. The species and amount of the grass seed mix were as follows:
