• RESULTS
lJ
Data from the 1994 revegetation monitoring studies at the Seneca II Mine are presented in
Tables 1 through 61 contained in Appendix 1. The list of plant species observed during these
studies (reclaimed and reference areas) are included in Table 62 in Appendix 2. Seed mixes
applied on areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in years 1981 through 1992 are included for
reference in Appendix 3. Site data from sample transects (orientation, slope, aspect, and
initials of samplers) are included as Appendix 4. Photographs of representative locations
within the reclaimed areas sampled in 1994, as well as photographs of the Mountain Brush and
Sagebrush reference areas are included in Appendix 5. Graphic depiction of summaries of
vegetation data, precipitation, and total degree days are presented in Figures 1 through 10 of
this report, starting on page 40. In the following descriptions, species that were encountered
quantitatively (i.e. "hit" by a sample point) are described first for a particular lifeform.
Species listed as "also present" were not hit but were present within one meter to either side of
the sample transect.
1983 Reclaimed Areas (Photographs 1 through 4)
Cover
Introduced perennial cool season grasses were the dominant lifeform in this unit with 39.6
percent of total vegetation cover (Table 1). Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum
intermedium) accounted for more than half of this while smooth brome (Bromo~ inermis)
and orchard grass (Dactvlis glomerata) were also important. Desert wheatgrass (Agropyron
cristatum ssp. desertorum), timothy (Phleum pratense), and Russian wildrye
(Psathyrostachvs iuncea) contributed the balance. Meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) was also
present. Native perennial cool season grasses were twice as diverse (16 species) but only
provided about one-third as much of the total vegetation cover as introduced perennial cool
season grasses (14.0 percent). Agassiz bluegrass (per aaassizensis) and sheep fescue (Festuca
brachvohvlla ssp. coloradensis) each accounted for roughly one-quarter of this lifeform's total
vegetation cover. Canada bluegrass (per com rp essay was also important. Mountain brome
(Ceratochloa carinata), foxtail barley (Criterion iubatum), Montana wheatgrass (Elvmus
lanceolatus fm. albicans), thickspike wheatgrass (Elvmus lanceolatus fm. dasystachva), slender
wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus ssp. trachycaulus), basin wildrye (Levmus cinereus),
western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii), beardless bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria
• 9
