1
INTRODUCTION
' The Eagle No. 5 and No. 6 Mines are underground coal mines located
approximately seven miles south of Craig, Colorado (Figure 1). The areal
' extent of the underground workings in the No. 5 Mine was approximately
1,900 acres at the end of 1987. Approximately 9 acres had been mined in
the No. 6 Mine as of December 31, 1987. The coal being mined is from the
Cretaceous Age Williams Fork Formation, "F" Seam.
Hydrologic monitoring has been conducted at the mine site since 1980.
This report presents the results of the 1987 monitoring. This report
' fulfills the requirements of Stipulation No. 7 in the mining permit for
the No. 5 Mine. The complete 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 monitoring is
presented in the respective Annual Reports.
The hydrologic monitoring is divided into two parts: 1) ground water and
2) surface water. The monitoring locations are shown on Figure 2 and
summarized on Table 1. The water quality monitoring includes field
' parameters (Table 2), water quality parameters (Table 3) and NPDES
parameters (Table 4). All of the monitoring is carried out by Empire
personnel. The water quality samples are analyzed by ACZ Laboratories
' (formerly Bookcliffs Commerical Laboratories), Steamboat Springs,
Colorado, a USEPA certified laboratory. This report includes data
collected specifically to meet requirements of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division (CMLRD) as well as data collected to meet the
t requirements of the Colorado Wastewater Discharge Permit System (NPDES
permits). A complete listing of all the water quality data is submitted
separately.
I~ ~
u

1

' 1
