Planting areas were on Gold & Zinc Hills, with limited "fill-in" plantings
on the southern aspect of the Gillispie dump. Agroform (20-10-10) slow
release tablets were used as fertilizer w/planting. Heavy mulch appli-
cation (4 inches) was utilized for mud break/moisture retention directly
around each seedling. The mulch was rocked down to prevent wind blown
movement. Shrub species included:
98 Rites Cereum
98 Rites Delicious
98 Symphericorpus Oreophylus
275 Atriplex c°bnescens
96 Cercocarpus Montanus
64 Artemisia Frigida
128 Rhus Trilobata
64 Crown Vetch
Wax Current
Golden Current
Mtn Snowberry
Four-Wing Saltbush
Mtn. Mahogony
Fringed Sage
Three Leaf Sumac
Phase II, planting of the tree & shrub species was performed in two sessions:
one in early April - all trees, 115 bare root Atriplex, and the remaining
shrubs in early June. Planting crews consisted of Colorado Mtn College
Environmental Technology students, under contract with Colorado Mtn College.
Phase III work was also performed throughout the surtener by planting crews,
as the summer practicum student did not work out this year due to personnel
problems. Field maintenance, watering, and base line work suffered somewhat,
although we recieved timely moisture throughout the growing season and managed
to get by with app. 75~ survival rates or better on all species.
1986 reclamation efforts will include tree and shrub planting on the Iron
Hill Site (trees already in the ground as of this writing) and Phase I caork
on our South Dump and the Uranuim Hill Area anon-permitted area) south of
our existing affected land, but extremely visible from the highway.
We plan on limited road building on Titonium Hill, also South of our permitted
land, to assess the gypsum reserves remaining in this area "mined out" (high
graded) back in the 60's. Core drilling operation during the summer of
1986 should result in a carnaittment to mine in the future and subsequent
permit amendment proceedings.
1985 also resulted in a new structure added to the property - a new
maintenance and office/lunchroom facility was completed in Feb, 1986.
A review of our species list will likely show our weighted species selection.
This reflects the relative success we've encountered with certain species.
Timing of planting and species selection will continue to be priorities
with our program. We are now attempting to ascertain the maximum number
of species we can successfully establish as bare root (doi~nant) stock in
April vs. our conventional June planting, due to better moisture conditions
and longer growing season with less transplant stress. Timing is a critical
factor in regards to transplant stress and survival.
