During 1985, 185,000 tons of di-hydrous
calcium sulphate was extracted for wallboard and cement production and 570,000
tons of waste materials were transported to various dump areas within the
100 acres of affected land, circumscribed on the accompanying map. Reclamation
efforts included work in several areas as shown, also including all Three
Phases of Reclamation as follows:
Phase I - Backfilling, grading, contouring, site preparation. This work
occurred on the Iron Hill Area, a 5 acre site, mostly North sloping, dis-
sturbed by the Northeastward dozing of argillaceous limestones from the
top 125' of Iron (Magazine) Hill. The area was rough contoured with our
K-9-L bulldozer and included the depositing of six to eight inches of gravelly
surface material from nearby mining areas. Finish contouring and rilling
along the contour (moisture retension enhancing) was performed with a rented
D-3 bulldozer. A 2:1 slope was maintained throughout most of area, excepting
a 1/2 acre area directly above the crusher site which approaches 1 1/2:1.
Phase II work on this area was performed in late Oct, 1985 with the appli-
cation of inorganic Nitrogen 80#/acre and triple super phosphate 80#/acre
and the seeding mixture (listed below) broadcast at 40#/acre rate. The
entire area was then mulched with San Luis valley wheat straw at app. 2000#/
acre. Additional Phase II planting of trees and shrub species are planned
for 1986. This is the first time we have experimented with late season
planting and mulching. Results noted so far in 1986 are very positive -
a good stand of sweet clover and wheat grasses can be viewed as of mid April
a good sign considering limited moisture availability so far this year.
We expect to continue with this timing scenerio for better grassland
establishment prior to tree and shrub installation. Heavy browsing by mule
deer of the new grass has been noted by the writer, although they seem to
be not bothering our Ponderosa Seedlings planted in April 1986, (a severe
problem in the past.)
Phase II work in 1985 also included the planting of 350 tree seedlings
purchased from the Colorado State Forest Service and 880 shrub and forb
species produced by Pleasant Avenue Nursery, Buena Vista Colorado.
The tree species were mostly three year nursery grown stock from the Fort
Collins site, except the Pinion Pine (1 year).
Species included:
Ponderosa Pine
Pinion Pine
Rocky Mtn Juniper
Blue Spruce
~ n
Y~
C ~.3a1
