Lxhhead
Eaecuiive Director
Michael 0. Long
Division Director
I have completed a preliminary review of the referenced AHR, and I am forwazding a copy for
your review of conformance with PHC projections.
Munger Canyon Mine was, as usual, in temporary cessation for the entire yeaz. McClane was in
temporary cessation during the fourth quarter of 1996, but resumed active status during the first
quarter of 1997, and approximately 50,000 tons of coal was produced during the quarter.
Although the mine remained in active status for the remainder of the water yeaz, there was no
further coal production.
Sampling frequencies and analytical pazameters were incompliance with permit requirements,
with the exception that 1st quarter, 1997 East Salt Creek samples were not obtained because of
"extremely thick ice at the sample points." Also, summer storm event flows were sampled on
McClane and Munger Creek, but snowmelt flows were not sampled because the streams were dry
when checked. Due the relatively small, low elevation watersheds, snowmelt flow is a very
briefphenomenon in the creeks (I don't believe I've ever observed it).
I have attached documentation regarding the big storm events of August and September, which
was not included in the AHR.
Let me know if you need any further information for your review.
Thanks.
cc: Larry Routten
des\97ahr.mem
