~ _iii i~uiiii~iiiiii~ <br />809 <br />' INTRODUCTION Doc Date:12/11/2001 <br />' The 1992 Hydrologic Monitoring Annual Report for the Sanborn Creek <br />Mine is hereby submitted by Somerset Mining Company in accordance <br />with the Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land <br />' Reclamation Board (MLR) an pursuant to the Colorado Surface Coal <br />Mining Reclamation Act. <br />Sanborn Creek Mine, operated by Somerset Mining Company, is <br />located near Somerset, Colorado, along State Highway 133. <br />Elk Creek, Bear Creek and Hubbard Creek flow across the permit <br />area and into the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Elk Creek, <br />' which drains the vaster portion of the property, has intermittent, <br />seasonal flow. Bear Creek is an ephemeral stream. Hubbard Creek <br />is a perennial stream which drains the western portion of the <br />' permit area. Peak water flows occur during the snow runoff and <br />increased precipitation in the Spring of each year. <br />' Methods of analysis were consistent with EPA standard testing <br />procedures, the parameters of which are presented in Appendix 1. <br />The data collected was based on the frequency rates also presented <br />' in Appendix 1. Map (#E8-3286) "Hydrologic Area Map" shows <br />locations of the water monitoring points and is included as <br />Appendix 5. <br />' The following sections of this report describe the methods and <br />' results of the monitoring activities at the Sanborn Creek Mine. <br />SURFACE WATER MONITORING <br />' Methods: <br />' During quarterly visits, flow measurements were made by <br />measuring the culvert width and water depth. Velocity was then <br />estimated by timing objects over a know distance. In the office, <br />' cross section are then drawn to asses change in stream bed <br />configuration and flows were calculated. NF-1, NF-2, U-1, S-1, S- <br />2, C-1, H-1, P-1, AG-1, BG-1, CG-1, HN-1, HG-1 and BC-1 water <br />' stations were used to gather data for monitoring surface water. <br />' A YSI (Yellow Springs Instrument) Model #33 was used to <br />measure water quality, temperature, salinity, and conductivity. <br />The pH levels were taken using a Cole Palmer Model #5941-00 Ph <br />' meter. All other parameters were found by collecting samples in <br /> <br />
