In an unpublished dissertation on ecology of meadow mice Microtus) in Boulder
p (
County, Cruzan (1968) reported Z hudsonius from two localities. From 18-20 July
1967, in a stand of narrow-leafed cottonwood (Populus angusfitblia) with grassy
understory at Sawhill Ponds, meadow jumping mice comprised three of 17 captures
(17.6% of all captures, capture rate, 17 per 1000 trap-nights, along with Microtus
pennsy/vanicus, Peromyscus maniculatus, and Sorex cinereus). This locality was
trapped in the course of the present study. From an area of roughly similar vegetation
at the mouth of Lefthand Canyon over the period 20-22 July 1966 he captured Z
hudsonius at a rate of 11 per 1000 trap-nights, 7.1% of small mammals captured, along
with Reithrodontomys megalotis, P. maniculatus, and M. ochrogaster. Ryon (1996)
trapped at this locality in 1995.
In the past two decades there have been a number of studies of small mammals on the
Colorado Piedmont in the vicinity of Boulder. Several of them have revealed the
presence of meadow jumping mice on and near Boulder City and County open space
lands. Dawson (1989) reported a survey of small mammals on City of Boulder Open
Space. He captured three meadow jumping mice in 340 trap-nights in plains riparian
habitat on the Tracy Collins parcel along Coal Creek (23, 25, and 31 May 1989).
Another jumping mouse, probably Z. hudsonius judging from geographic and ecological
considerations, was captured on 19 July 1989 on the Stengel Parcel, east of Eldorado
Springs.
Under contract with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Compton (1992) searched for
meadow jumping mice at a few selected localities southeast of Boulder. Three sites
were trapped on City of Boulder Open Space: Tracy Collins (375 trap-nights), Burke I
and II (along Baseline Road, east of South Boulder Creek, 300 trap-nights), and
VanVleet (S of Colorado 157, 300 trap-nights). One meadow jumping mouse was
taken at the last locality on the second of three nights of trapping (4.1 percent of total
captures).
R. E. Stoecker (ERO Resources, 1995) trapped small mammals in October 1994 as
part of an environmental review of the South Boulder Creek Management Area. A total
of 600 trapnights yielded 330 captures of small mammals, including one meadow
jumping mouse. The animal was captured on 10 October east of South Boulder Creek
just north of the US Highway 36 bridge (SW 1/4 NW 1/4 sec. 10, T 1 S. R 70 W).
Habitat was dense sedge (Carex nebrascensis) adjacent to coyote willow (Salix
exigua).
On 4 August 1993, C. Miller picked up a partial specimen (hindquarters, including tail)
of a meadow jumping mouse along the South Boulder Creek Trail, directly east of the
barn on the Lower Van Meet Parcel (NE 1/4 sec. 9, T 1 S, R. 70 W) in an area of
irrigated tallgrass prairie adjacent to plains riparian woodland. The specimen was
preserved in alcohol in the University of Colorado Museum.
Pague et al. (1994) studied small mammals of Doudy Draw, on the Boulder-Jefferson
county line south of Eldorado Springs, and reported a specimen of Zapus princeps
4
