Rc:hmann <br />DATE: September 1, 1995 <br />n- ~ l -oa f <br />~-77`a~~ <br />SUBJECT: Reports concerning U.S. DOE administration of wanium lease tracts in <br />Southwestern (:olorado, Southeastern Utah, and Northern New Mexico <br />The U.S. DOE currently administers 43 wanium lease tracts located in Southwestern Colorado <br />(38), Southeastern Utah (4), and Northern New Mexico (1). The DOE approach to reclamation <br />of these mines is discussed in a paper presented at the Waste Management Symposia this yeaz <br />(WM '95); in addition, DOE:'s assessment of potential risk to human health posed by these sites <br />is discussed in a Draft rnvironntental Assessment published in May 1995. The documents and <br />key points contained in each, which aze relevant to any consideration of risk posed by wanium <br />mines in Colorado or reclamation of such mines, aze as follows: <br />1. Draft Environmental Assessment for the Uranium Lease Management Program DOE/EA- <br />1037, May 1995. <br />- TEDE <NRC standard of 100 mrem/yr based on camping on waste rock for 2 <br />weeks <br />2. Abandoned Uranium Mine Reclamation for DOE Uranium Lease Management Program, <br />from: Proceedings, Vllaste Management '95. <br />- Plan implemented by DOE will employ standazd reclamation methods to meet all <br />stated objectives, including reduction of general public's exposwe to radiological <br />materials. <br />MRR/pl <br />Attachments <br />cc: Hazold R.
