ROCKY PLATS SOIL PLUTONIUM~9+zso SURVEYS FROM 1970 TO 1991
Past studies have difficulty providing definitive answers to the extent of soil
contamination or predicting soil plutonium levels in various areas. This is due to the lack
' of good location data for the sampling points from study to study and the limited number
of sampling points.
' Thee other researchers did not limit their study to offsite areas and included areas on plant
site. However, their studies did concentrate sampling in the eastern portion of the plant
and surrounding environment. Northern and northwestern areas still have not been
sampled to the degree needed to understand plutonium levels and sources. (Lataor)
There is very little information for the northern and western portions of the plant and
Buffer zone to support the CDH results.
^ Have these soil plutonium levels created problems in the biotic environment of Rocky
Flats?
TF~ere are numerous biological studies on and around the Rocky Flats environment.
' Work performed in conjunction with NEPA and the RFURI workplans is now preparing
more thorough information on the status of the aquatic and terrestrial environment in the
principal drainages of the area. All results to date have been negative with respect to any
' adverse impact associated with contaminants from Rocky Flats, including plutonium.
Tl~e results of the RFURI processes will provide a more definitive relationship between
chemical transport and ecological resources. (LJSDOEd)
CDH Soil Survey results are sufficient to draw conclusions about the spatial extent of soil
contamination with plutonium for proper oversight. Delineation of definitive boundaries for
' areas requiring remedial and or management practices in perpetuity are still under study by the
owner and its operator, USDOE and EG&G, respectively.

30
