Summer and Fall Water Report
1996
Apex #2 Mine
Permit C-81-011
Surface Water
In all of 1996, the single sediment pond for the entire disturbed area did not discharge;
it only contained water in the spring as a result of sno~vmelt. All disturbed area is
channeled into the sediment pond except for a small exemption area of less than 0.1
acre located at the reclaimed office area. The sediment pond discharge is permitted
with the Colorado Department of Health as NPDES Permit # 000036668. Quarterly
DMR forms are attached for the year. Quarterly sediment pond inspections revealed no
problems with functionality of the pond.
Trout Creek, the perennial stream located adjacent to the reclaimed yard area, was
tested quarterly for pH, Specific conductance, temperature and flow. These results are
also attached for above and below the minesite. The results for 1996 show normal
quality conditions, although flows were somewhat less than normal due to the very dry
summer.
All portal seals are intact and do not show any signs of seepage or other problems. The
mine or its reclamation has not had any adverse effect on the prevailing hydrologic
balance. The diversion ditch above the minesite along the residential access road
required cleaning as did the culvert crossing of this diversion under the Trout Creek
Road. This work was also completed in the fall of 1995.
A new surface water downstream sampling site is being considered since the Pittsburgh
&Midway TR-A site is over 2 miles downstream and that area has experienced some
problems due to the surface mining in the area.
Ground Water
There are no monitoring wells in the permit area or in the surrounding area. The mine
has not affected the prevailing groundwater conditions and it is not expected that the
reclaimed site will affect any local groundwater in the future.
The alluvial well adjacent to Trout Creek immediately upstream which was used for
the upstream hydrologic station has been reclaimed and the readings are taken in Trout
Creek, approximately 9 feet away from the station.
