Future Hvdrolooic Monitorinq
A continuous flow meter will be installed on the flow from spring
5-31 to provide accurate monitoring of flows from this key spring.
Springs 5-30, SP13-5, and SP85, and Pond P13-7 are also included in
the current monitoring program. However, much of the hydrologic
data collected has little utility or relevance for monitoring
mining impacts. Flow from most of the springs and ponds is too low
to be of any significance for water supply for stock or wildlife
and have virtually no affect on the water quality or quantity in
there respective drainages. Re-evaluation of the current
monitoring program in light of observed and potential impacts and
current mine plans is in order to better focus the monitoring
• program.
Monitoring of springs and ponds that are located outside the angle
of draw of recent (prior 3 years) or future (next 3 years) provide
little or no information concerning potential mining impacts.
Although no significant impacts on the hydrology from subsidence
have been observed; it is possible that subsidence could reduce (or
increase) spring flows or dewater ponds. However; no impacts on
water quality would be expected.
In order to rationalize the hydrologic monitoring program Cyprus
Orchard Valley Coal Corporation makes the following proposals:
Water quality data should only be collected at selected springs.
• Only those springs which discharge continuously throughout each
summer should be sampled. Only flow rate should be collected from
21
