Walther
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
We have received the referenced monitoring report dated October 7, 2003. The report
included annual analytical data for Alluvial Wells UTL-02 and UTL-04, located at the Unit
Train Loadout. The wells were sampled on 8/27/03. 2002 data for Well UTL-02 included
an apparently erroneous total dissolved solids (TDS) value (2600 mg/I), that was
significantly higher than any previously reported values for the well, and out of balance with
the reported conductivity level. We made note of this questionable data during our review
of the 2002 annual hydrology report. In a letter of June 13, 2003, we concluded that the
reported value was likely due to analytical error, and we indicated that any request for
further assessment or action would be deferred pending review of the 2003 analyses.
The 2003 TDS level was 610 mgll. This value compares favorably with the five year
average for 1997 through 2001, which is 677 mg/I. The 2003 TDS value further supports
the conclusion that the TDS value of 2600 mg/I reported in 2002 was erroneous.
We are requesting no further action or assessment at this time. In the future, we would
request that you check for any apparently erroneous or questionable results immediately
upon receipt of the analyses, so that the raw data can be verified and additional sample(s)
can be obtained in a timely manner if warranted.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Since el ?~
Dam T.
