CLAW-1 Alluvial well located at the mouth of Ciruela Canyon. Established to
monitor potential effects of Golden Eagle mining and surface activities in
the canyon.
ACAW-1 Alluvial well located at the mouth of Apache Canyon. Established to
monitor potential effects of mining in the canyon.
Contained in the following sections is a description of the methods and results of the
first quarter of monitoring activities conducted at the New Elk and Golden Eagle mine
sites.
2.0 Surface Water Monitoring
Monthly surface water samplings were conducted at each of the five designated
stations PRS-1, PRS-2, PRS-3, MDNE-1 and MDGE-1 on 6 to 8 March, 28 and 29 March,
and 24 April. Quarterly surface water samplings were conducted at each of the six
designated stations CCS-1, CCS-2, SCF-1, ACF-1, MDNE-1 and MDGE-1 on 6 to 8 March.
2.1 Methods
During each monthly sampling, in-situ water quality measurements of temperature,
conductivity, pH, and dissolved oxygen were made using a Hydro Lab Model 4000 field
sampling kit. An expanded list of water quality parameters was collected during the
quarterly sampling which was sent to Core Laboratories, Inc., of Denver for laboratory
analysis. Filtration of certain water quality parameters was accomplished in the field
with a Geotech 2.4 liter barrel filter.
Water quantity or flow measurements were conducted by a number of methods. At
the beginning of the program, a straight, flat, stable reach of each stream station was
selected as a sampling location. Near the downstream end of the reach, across-section
was surveyed perpendicular to the stream flow and permanently marked with stakes and
flagging. Flow was measured with aTeledyne-Gurley Model 625 Pygmy type current
meter using the USGS six-tenths-depth method. At the mine discharge stations, discharge
was measured by the pump ratings or by a direct volumetric measurement with a
calibrated container. In Apache and Santistevan Canyons, calibrated flume stations were
