3.2 Results
Results of all ground water chemistry and water level measurements are presented
in Tables 3-1 through 3-5.
With the wells not being monitored for some time, initial bailing removed water
which appeared extremely high in suspended solids and iron from the sides of the casing.
Water quality field parameters did not indicate this poor quality. Water quality which
was collected indicated a pH ranging from 6.6 to 7.6 (S.U.), conductivity ranging from 232
to 750 (umhos), and temperature ranging from 3.4 to 8.8 (oC) (Tables 3-1 to 3-3). During
the April 24th sampling, the location of well number PAW-2 was changed from above the
Golden Eagle Mine to the downstream corner .of the existing coal refuse disposal pile at
the New Elk Mine. This change was approved by Roy Cox of the MLRD and will be used
to monitor the downstream corner of the pile. Water levels in each of the wells was at or
very close to the Purgatoire River elevation.
Measurements taken at PAW-3 (below the Golden Eagle Mine water discharge and
existing coal refuse disposal pile) indicate an elevated conductivity over that sampled in
other wells. Future analysis should indicate potential effects of mining activities in this
area.
As of the end of the first quarter, alluvial wells to be installed at Stations CLAW-1
and ACAW-1 were not completed (Tables 3-4 and 3-5). This work is scheduled to be
complete within the next sixty (60) days.
