Soil Redistribution
• The topsoil that was used for redistribution was live handled from ahead of the active mining area
to the awaiting backfill area. Phase IX topsoil campaign was done in . A total of 42,500 cubic yards
was moved.
Soil Thickness
The thickness of soil replaced during 1998 was verified by sampling. Sample sites for the New
Horizon 2 mining area were selected systematically utilizing a 467 foot by 467 foot grid pattern.
Sites at New Horizon 2 were surveyed and staked in [he field using a Geodimeter 510 total survey
station.
A Z-3/4 inch bucket auger was used at each site to excavate a pilot hole through the entire soil strata.
An abrupt boundary, defined by color and rock t~agment content, typically occuned at the soil/spoil
interface. The replaced soil thickness was measured through the pilot hole immediately after
encountering the spoil.
Soil thickness was determined at the 26 sites at NH2 shown on Exhibit 985. Soil thickness
information for each sample site is located on the map.
New Horizon 2 has many different soil thickness requirements as shown on Exhibit 98.7, which is
2.05.4-4 from the current permit.
Soil Salvaee and Storage
All suitable soil has been salvaged ahead of mining at New Horizon 2. Approximately 93,168 (LIFT
2), 20,090 (LIFT 1), attd 42,387 (MIXED) cubic yards of soil are stored in stockpiles at the end of
1998 as shown on Exhibit 98.9 (1998 Topsoil Balance Map). The soils were separately stockpiled
by soil types as specified by our permit.
Cover Croo
All topsoil stockpiles have been planted with the approved cover crop seed mixture.
Weed and Pest Control Activities
Weed control was carried out in the summer and fall months of 1998. Target species included
Russian Knapweed, Canada Thistle, Sun Flower, White Top and Field Bindweed. Spot spaying was
done at NH 1 &NH2, see Exhibit 98.1 & 98.4. The treated sites were small and random. To small
to plot on a map accurately. There was no Pest Control measures implemented in 1998 because
there was no need at this time.
• (tl: \tlata \wpdata\rec-repo\9B re¢epo. QOC)
