METHOD OF DETECTION
There are four basic methods used to detect cyanide. They are
Silver Nitrate Titration, Calorimetric Method, Cyanide Selective
Electrode, and Ion Chromatography. All four methods work equally
well with Weak Acid Dissociable Cyanides and Total Cyanides because
the cyanides in the sample are converted to HCN and are absorbed
into a sodium hydroxide solution. The cyanide present in the
samples is distilled away from interfering substances. The
detection limits for the four methods differ. The Silver Nitrate
Titration has the highest detection limit of the four methods,
with the detection limit of 1.0 mg/L. For samples containing
Less than 1 mg/L, one of the other three methods of detection
must be used to quantitate the amount of cyandide present.
All four methods show interferences, both positive and negative,
for free cyanide determinations, depending upon what other
compounds are in solution in the sample.
