S~MIT ENGINEERING ~.
ENGINEERS AND LAND SURVEYORS
1317 State
Alamosa, Colorado 81101
(3031589-6147
"i ~ _ Z-11
Mr. Mark Loye
Mined Land Reclamation Board
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mark;
December 15, 1983
JN - 01168
R~~~B~~®
DEC Ia lyti3
fdINED LAND REC! Ah1ATI0N DIVISION
Colo. Dept. of Natural Resources
Enclosed is a map of the Garret Gravel Pit located in Conejos
County, that shows the present conditions and the most significant
perimeter changes of the pit since 1982. I believe the following
information addresses all of the requirements for an annual report.
From 1982 to 1983, mining operations in the Garret Pit have concentrated
on the west and south parts. Approximately 2.56 acres have been
excavated. The pit perimeter has been moved outward approximately
100 to 150 feet at some locations (see enclosed Map). The north,
east, and lower (7684') level of the pit have remained essentially
undisturbed since 1982. Approximately two acres of the north and
east slopes are graded and revegetation of these (and other) slopes
is taking place naturally. Typical slopes on the north wall are 4~:1.
Vegetative species reinhabiting the pit consist of native grasses
and rabbit brush. The topsoil and crusher reject piles are also
being naturally revegetated, especially on the wetter north slopes.
No artificial revegetation operations have been initiated and so
no fertilizers or mulch have been applied to the soils.
The graded slopes appear to he well stabilized. There is no
evidence of excessive sheet or gully erosion taking place on the
graded slopes. There do not appear to be any major disturbances
to the wildlife or water resources of the permit area.
Expansion of the pit during 1984 is expected to be approximately
the same as in previous years (about two and one half acres).
Expansion will be concentrated on the west side of the pit.
The actual amount of excavation will depend on the demands of the
Colorado Division of Highways, Alamosa and Conejos Counties, and
private projects.
The $350.00 annual fee has been sent by the Southway Construction
Company separately. Please let me know if there is additional
information I can provide.
Sincerely, i~~ry~~3
off. ~• w~d~
Ro ert Chia G
~. ~~
