DESCRIPTION OF UNUSUAL CONDITIONS OR EVENTS: Other than the drought
conditions, no other unusual conditions or events were noted except for one item. There seems to be
quite a few Mockingbirds along Coal Creek this yeaz. This species is not exactly raze this faz west,
but it is uncommon. It is possible that the Mockingbirds moved west in search of wetter conditions.
Unfortunately, until July, they were probably quite disappointed. Mockingbird songs have been
heard in this azea in the past, but never as abundantly as this year. It was hazd to tell for sure, but it
appeared there were four Mockingbirds along the stream through Section 36.
PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION: A CD is supplied which contains a lazge number of
images of the site. These images are all in JPG format and all, except for any panoramic merges,
contain the EXIF data regazding the date, time, and other specifications of the image. The JPG
format images are saved at a high resolution (low compression) ratio and aze generally compazable to
the TIFF format images. If TIFF format images aze required for a particular purpose it is
recommended that the images needed be noted and a request be made for TIFF versions of those
images. TIFF format images aze uncompressed and aze the highest quality images, but file sizes are
large. Many of the original images were taken in RAW format and converted to DNG formats for
archiving. The JPG and TIFF versions were made from those. After tonal balancing most of the
RAW and DNG files were deleted after the TIFF files were saved. No retouching was done to any
images other than the removal of dust shadows in the sky. Dust shadows, which are faint dark
blotches created when dust gets on the sensor of a digital SLR, are common with some cameras.
Generally point and shoot and Olympus DSLR's are not subject to these artifacts. All of the images
were taken with a variety of cameras including Canon l OD digital SLR, Canon Powershot S2IS,
Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom, and Olympus E500 digital SLR. The last three are the preferred
cameras for monitoring. The l OD is excellent, but presents some problems with dust artifacts and the
need to shoot in RAW to obtain the very best quality. The C-8080 produces the finest images of all
four, but often exhibits severe focusing problems in low contrast scenes such as those encountered
frequently on the prairie and this camera can be very frustrating. The S2IS is the all-azound winner,
but resolution is somewhat lacking for highly detailed work.
The photos are arranged in separate directories. All of the images in each directory were
taken on the same date, although they may show different azeas of the site. To aid in the location of
images a sepazate directory contains "contact sheet" PDF files of all the photos. These PDF files
have the same name as the directories containing the actual images. It is recommended that the
"contact sheets" be used first to review the images and find any particulaz images. When an image is
found that is of interest, note the name of the image file. Go to that directory where you will find the
full sized image. The images in the PDF files are shown at four images to a page so the images aze
lazge enough in the PDF file to determine whether that is the image you want. It is also possible to
extract the images from the PDF file pages, but the quality will not be particulazly good except for
very limited uses such as emailing. It is better to use the actual image rather than an extraction for all
other uses, including presentations and especially printing.
The CD also contains a complete PDF version of this report.
(Note: A copy of this report, less photodocumentation CD's, must also be provided to the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology to be included in the Reclamation Permit file.)
Status report for 2006 (July 15, 2006) Page 13 of 13
