SANDHILL CRANE ACTIVITY
Although likely nesting areas in the vicinity of the Yoast Mine were investigated, no •
sandhill crane nests were discovered in the area during 2006. On the morning of 27 April 2006,
two sandhill cranes were reported flying north over the valley in eastern SW%< Section 8, in the
general direction of the previous year's nest site. However, that site (NE'/e Section 8, TSN,
R87W) proved to be uninhabited by cranes and the water level was quite low.
Sandhill cranes were also documented within the Yoast azea perimeter on three other
occasions in 2006. One crane was observed foraging in grassland along the drainage in SE'/4
SW'/a Section 28, T6N, R87W on 26 April. On the morning of 29 April, two cranes were heard
calling from approximately NE'/4 Section 29, T6N, R87W, and a third was heazd answering from
SW'/a Section 30. On that same morning, two more cranes were heard calling north ofNofstger
Reservoir in NE%< Section 4, TSN, R87W.
LITERATURE CITED
Cannon, R.W. and F.L. Knopf 1981.
