• 2006 SOIL AND REGRADED OVER$URDEN SAMPLING AT SENECA COAL
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Soil and regraded overburden (spoil) sampling was conducted at Seneca Coal during
2006. The Yoast and Seneca IIW (2W) "final grade spoil" overburden sampling was
conducted by Tom Dockstader, Seneca Reclamation Assistant, at various times during
2006. He also collected a number of surface samples at a previously regraded azea on the
Seneca II Mine. The Yoast and 2W soil samp]ing and evaluation was conducted by James
Nyenhuis, Certified Professional Soil Scientist (ARCPACS #2753). The following is a
list of all reapplied topsoil and regraded spoil sampling and evaluation completed during
2006:
Yoast Mine Regraded Spoil Samuling (various dates, 2006):
Thirty-seven (37) geographically distributed, selected locations of "final grade spoil" at
the Yoast Mine were sampled in 2006. The sample density was based on a 60-degree
slant grid on 500 foot cerners on the Wadge Formation spoil and 300 foot centers on the
Wolf Creek Formation spoil. Each of the thirty-seven spoil samples was a composite of
the upper two feet of final regraded spoil material at their respective sample locations.
The samples were sent to Inter-Mountain Laboratories {IML) in Sheridan, Wyoming for
standazd overburden analysis. The samples were numbered Yoast #1 through #37. The
attached map shows all Yoast Mine regraded spoil sample locations.
Yoast Mine Reapplied Topsoil Samo6ng (July 2006):
Two deep backhoe pits were dug at randomly selected, geographically distributed
locations on reclaimed azeas at the Yoast Mine. A total of eight samples were collected
from the two backhoe pits and delivered to IML for standazd analysis. The pit locations
and samples were numbered: YTS-06-PI (0 to 7", 7 to 17", 17 to 36", and 36 to 72"), and
YTS-06-P2 (0 to 8", 8 to 20", 20 to 40", and 40 to 72"). The sampling included the
reapplied topsoIl to the spoil contact as well as the underlying spoil to a depth of 60
inches or deeper. The reapplied topsoil part of the pits (to a depth of 17" for YTS-06-P1,
and to 20" for YTS-06-P2) received standazd soil analysis; and the regraded spoil, or
mixed topsoil and regraded spoil, part of the pits received standazd overburden analysis.
A soil profile description was completed for each pit. The attached map shows all Yoast
Mine reapplied topsoil backhoe pit locations.
IIW (2W) Mine Regraded Spoil Samptipg (various dates, 20061:
Twenty-eight (28) geographically distributed, selected locations of "final grade spoil" at
the 2W Mine were sampled in 2006. The sample density was based on a 60-degree slant
grid on 500 foot centers on the Wadge Formation spoil and 300 foot centers on the Wolf
Creek Formation spoil. Each of the twenty-eight spoil samples was a composite of the
• upper two feet of final regraded spoil material at their respective sample locations. The
