1
' San Luis Project -Phase II Raise I Expansion Construction Sutus Report
' 4.4.1 Embanlmtent Raise Fill
The original specifications for construction of the embankment raise called for material Type 1
' fill for constructing the raise as a homogeneous, mono-fill structure. The gradation limits for
material Type 1 have been revised to allow the use of material with slightly greater fines
(percent passing a No. 200 sieve) content. This material is similar in nature to the Type 2
material used for the upstream face of the initial embankment. The following gradation limits
' have been adopted for the raise fill embankment material:
U.S. Standard Sieve Size 9o Finer By Weight
' '/e inch > 65
q 4 45-95
// 40 35-90
11200 < 35
Where in contact with the VLDPE liner at the ends of the embankment, the maximum allowable
' particle size for this material is Ith inches, elsewhere the maximum particle size is six inches.
In the event significant oversized material is encountered in fill material, as placed on the
embankment, this oversize is to be removed by working to the outside and inside face of the
' raise.
Embankment raise fill is being compacted to a minimum density of 85 percent of the maximum
' dry density (ASTM D-698). Development of a method specification to achieve this minimum
density has proven acceptable. Currently, the fill is placed in maximum three foot thick loose
lifts and compacted through trafficking by the Caterpillar Model 777 haul trucks with an empty
gross vehicle weight of approximately 65 tons. The haul truck traffic is routed to provide
' coverage of the fill.
4.4.2 Liner Cover/Drainage Blanket
Material Type 2 was specified for use as the liner cover/drainage blanket material in the
' Earthwork Technical Specifications (Appendix F of the Phase II, Raise 1 Design Report.
