Mr. Raye - 2 - September 3, 1986
Alternative mulch treatments could include native hay or straw mulches at
varying application rates, hydromulch, excelsior mats, or other types of
commercially available materials. Hay or straw mulches will probably need to
be netted down to prevent being blown away. Soil amendments could include
fertilizer and/or gypsum applications. Although the surficial soil material
along the fill slope has been sampled and analyzed in the past (lab analyses
attached), some additional samples should be taken to obtain a more complete
picture of soil conditions within the plot sites. In terms of plot sizing,
each plot should be of sufficient size to allow for periodic line transect
sampling, clipping, and to provide sufficient surface area on each mulch
treatment to accurately evaluate the full range of species included in the
seed mix. A control plot should also be established to test the seed mix on
an area containing no mulch.
In reviewing the Deserado permit file, some past correspondence relating to
revegetation concerns within the mine area were located and have been enclosed
for your review. Some of this information may be useful in determining the
most appropriate design for the proposed revegetation test plots.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at 866-3567.
Sincerely,
G it~~~~~
Tom Gillis
Reclamation Specialist
TG/vj r
Enclosure(s)
3349E
