2005 SOIL AND REGRADED OVERBURDEN SAMPLING AT SENECA COAL
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Soil and regraded overburden (spoil) sampling was conducted at Seneca Coal during
2005. The sampling and evaluation was conducted primarily by James Nyenhuis,
Certified Professional Soil Scientist (ARCPACS #2753). The spoil sampling completed
during July 2005 was done by Seneca Coal personnel. The following is a list of all
reapplied topsoil and regraded spoil sampling and evaluation completed during 2005:
Yoast Mine Reapplied Topsoil Sampling (September 2005):
Three deep baclchoe pits were dug at randomly selected, geographically distributed
locations on reclaimed areas at the Yoast Mine. A total of thirteen samples were
collected from the three backhoe pits and delivered to Inter-Mountain Laboratories, Inc.
(IML) in Sheridan, Wyoming, for standazd analysis. The samples were numbered: YTS-
OS-Pl (0 to 6", 6 to 16", 16 to 34", and 34 to 60"), YTS-OS-P2 (0 to 7", 7 to 18", 18 to
29", 29 to 48", and 48 to 72"), and YTS-OS-P3 (0 to 12", 12 to 24", 24 to 44", and 44 to
64"). A soil profile description was completed for each pit. The sampling included the
reapplied topsoil to the underlying spoil contact as well as any underlying spoil to a depth
of 60 inches or deeper. The attached map shows all Yoast Mine reapplied topsoil
• baclchoe pit locations.
2W Mine Reapplied Topsoil Sampling (September 2005):
Three deep backhoe pits were dug at randomly selected, geographically distributed
locations on reclaimed areas at the 2W Mine. A total of eleven samples were collected
from the three backhoe pits and delivered to IML for standazd analysis. The samples
were numbered: 2WTS-OS-Pl (0 to 10", 10 to 22", 22 to 38", and 38 to 62"), 2WTS-OS-
P2 (0 to 7", 7 to 20", and 20 to 60"), and 2WTS-OS-P3 (0 to 6", 6 to 16", 16 to 36", and
36 to 60"). A soil profile description was completed for each pit. The sampling
included the reapplied topsoil to the underlying spoil contact as well as any underlying
spoil to a depth of 60 inches or deeper. The attached map shows a112W Mine reapplied
topsoil backhoe pit locations.
2W Mine Regraded Saoil Sampling (July 2005):
Forty-five randomly selected, geographically distributed locations at the 2W Mine were
sampled for regraded spoil. The sampling was conducted by Seneca Coal personnel and
each sample consisted of a composite of the upper two feet of regraded spoil material at
each respective sample location. The samples were collected and delivered to IML in for
standazd analysis. The samples were numbered 2W-OS-OI through 2W-O5~5. The
attached map shows all 2W Mine regraded spoil sample locations.
• Yoast Mine Regraded Saoil Sampling (September 2005):
1
