San Juan County Road Dept.
1512 Greene Street RECEIVE®
Silverton, Co. 81433
JUN 2 9 2001
June 23, 2001
Division of Minerals and Geology
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St. Room 215
Denver, CO. 80203
San Juan County
Eureka Pit- M-1990-070
1 . San Juan County extracted approximatley 3500 yards of
materilas from the Eureka gravel pit in 2000 and screened this
into 1 -I" road base. The county also hauled in 3000 yards of
materials from road work along the county roads and screened
this materials at the Eureka pit also. The screened road base
and spoils pile are both stockpiled at the Eureka site.
2 . San Juan Co. did some minor reclaimation at the Eureka pit
we did some backfilling and sloping to the old excavation area
and leveled out some old spoils piles and filled some low areas .
The County will ned to revise their reclamation requirements
because the exavation and reclamation for the slope angles are
wrong and need to be changed from a 4-1 slope angle to a 1 ' -
4 ' or a 1 ' in 5 ' slope angles this has been a mistake on the
original permit.
3 . The county did some minamal new excavation in 2000 but mostly
gathered and screened materials that had been pushed down in
previous operations in 1998 etc. The county has no plans to
screen, crush or excavate any new materals in 2001 just haul
the current roadbase and leave the spoils pile for future
crushing or reclamation backfilling etc .
4 . San Juan County will be revising its current permit in 2001
to either expand the permit area and change the reclamation
plan or close the current Eureka pit and apply for a new site
along the Animas river and Co. road #2 in and below the old
Eureka town site etc.
