Colony Shale Oil Project
Section 112 Annual Report
Map
RECEIVED
OCT 3 0 2002
Division of Minerals and Geology
Reclamation activities performed since the last anniversary date are shown in the enclosed map
"Affected Land Status -Figure 3."
Coarse Ore Vallev StabilizationlReclamation
In June, 2001 we began a three year Coarse Ore Valley Stabilization Project to smooth some
rough areas and improve the vegetation of Area 17. To date in 2002 western Colorado has
experienced its worst drought on record. In spite the drought we have been encouraged by the
2001 revegetation density and growth rate.
Although we have not made substantial revisions to our project plan, which was documented in
Attachment II of our 2001 annual report, execution in 2002 has deviated somewhat from that
plan. First, we were unable to obtain as much native Douglas Fir seed as we ordered. We
wanted 20 lbs. but were only able to get 6 lbs., which were broadcast seeded in April, 2002.
Availability of native Douglas Fir (pseudotsuga menziesii glauca) was limited by warmer
weather in 2001, which apparently demotivated the squirrels to gather seed, and by the U.S.
Forest Service reducing the number of permits they were willing to grant to Lincoln National
Forest in New Mexico. Because we do not consider revegetation to be complete in the areas to
be seeded with fir, those areas are still shown as "stabilized -temporary revegetation in the
map "Affected Land Status -Figure 3."
The second deviation from plan was a reduction in the actual acreage reclaimed in 2002. Last
year we estimated that we would reclaim 13 acres. Because some of the steep, rocky slopes in
Area 17 cannot practically be reclaimed and revegetated, the actual reclaimed area in 2002 was
seven acres. Grading and reseeding of the seven acres was completed in October, 2002 and
is shown in "Affected Land Status -Figure 3." The seed mix used is shown in Attachment I.
We have not completed detailed reclamation planning for 2003, but we expect it will be
generally consistent with the original plan from 2001.
Affected Land Status
Permitted acreage 6778
Historic Disturbances To Date Past Year
Affected acreage 1134 0
Reclaimed acreage 128 7
Planned Disturbances Next Year
Affected acreage 0
Reclaimed acreage (Area 17) 14
Beginning of active operations June 13, 1980
Date active operations ceased NA, ongoing
