Reclamation 1978-1979
btorrison Quarry

Reclamation during 1978 concentrated on plantings on a z-acre area
01.' road bank .located below the ecale office. The check dam, about 12
acre, was secured, and 2 secondary steps or benches near the top of
t}re quarry, comprising another 12 acre, were built of stripping and
soil, and graded to prepare for grass planting and stabilization in
early Spring, 1979•
During the 4th week of April, a number of native trees and shrubs
we're purchased and planted near the scale office and along ttre entr-
arrce road bank.
Adjacent to the office, we planted 6 ponderosa pine and 10 rocky
mountain jun.per,.all tetween 5 and 7 feet .tall. On the bank. below
t}re office we planted 10 dianthus, 2 sage, 3 leadplant, and 5 cliff-
rose. Below the entrance road grade, we set out 3 sage, 5 rabbitbrush
2 leadplant, and 5 mountain mahogany. `
iviost of the small plants survived, but most of the trees died, ow-
ir~g to the unavailability of a suitable watering routine or nearby
water source. '
Trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, and other plants that are hardy
ir~,the.full sun and dryer exposed situations around the quarry re-
vegetation sites are being selected for planting in the Spring of
1~}7g, Numbers and layouts of plants will be designed around the cap-
a<:ity of the drip irrigation system being developed to improve sur-
vival rates and hasten establishment of plants on the upper benches.
Traffic patterns around the stockpiles and load-out areas were
irnproved in 1978, Part of this work consisted of grading and leveling,
which produced a 3-foot high berm along the eastern end of the yard
above the check dam slope. This should prevent any runoff water from
e~rer running down the face of the check dam again and causing erosion
problems. Generally,. the stabilization measures for the check dam in-
s':alled in 1977 performed very satisfactorily ..A single large washout
on the North end of the check damfaintly visible in the right side
o..' the photo was filled by hand labor last fall, and additional wood-
en check poles were placed.
