Box 1488
Paonia, Colorado 81428
RE: Subsidence Survey
Bowie No. 1 Mine
On August 22, 23 and 26 of 2002 Cragg Surveying conducted the subsidence survey for the
Bowie #1 Mine.
This survey has been based on control monuments established by Colorado Westmoreland, Inc,
and later Cypress Coal. They have been in place for several years. The monuments are
4 inch iron pipes with a fixed plate which allows the instrument to be placed directly on
top of the monument.
The survey has been performed by different personnel over the years. Westmoreland and Cypress
surveyors up through September of 1994. Ute Engineering and Surveying from June, 1995
through November of 1997. Currently Cragg Surveying is now performing the surveys.
Past surveys have relied on the Westmoreland values for these control monuments. In May
of 2(X11 Cragg Surveying established survey control for aerial photo mapping for the reGamation
of the Bowie #1 Mine Site. This survey control was performed using GPS survey methods
calibrated to mine control points, Stations F, G and S. These stations are south of the mined
area and not subject to subsidence due to mining activity. However Stations B and C are over
mined out areas of the mine and subject to possible subsidence
When using this GPS survey there is a change in the values for Stations B, C and E
The following table shows the coordinate value for each subsidence station from the original
Westmoreland Survey Data to the Cragg Surveying GPS values of November 2001 and August 2002.
Coordinates for these monuments are as follows:
Northing Easting Elevation
Station B Westmoreland 16921.18 8754.49 8146.79
Cragg GPS Nov 2001 16919.97 8756.43 8145.33
Cragg GPS Aug 2002 16919.91 8756.49 8145.31
Station C Westmoreland 17750.57 8741.52 8148.05
Cragg GPS Nov 2001 17749.05 8743.46 8147.36
Cragg GPS Aug 2002 17749.05 8743.51 8147.25
Station E Westmoreland 18257.47 17859.89 8572.82
Cragg GPS Nov 2001 18256.67 17859.44 8573.23
Cragg GPS Aug 2002 18256.72 17859.47 8573.33
