Environmental Consulrnnts, lnc.
March 9, 2000
Mr. Kent Gorham
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
Division ofMinerals and Geology
215 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver- CO 80203-2273
RE: 1999 Annual Hydrology Report
New Elk Mine (Permit C-S1-012)
Dear Mr. Gorham:
RECEIVED
MAR 10 2000
p}hsion of Minerals >ti ~o~
By this letter, Picketwire Processing, LLC hereby submits two (2) copies of the1999 Annual
Hydrology Report for the New Elk Mine. This report includes data collected throughout the year
as well as information and clarification requested by the Division in letters dated August 20, August
27, and December 9, 1999. As per flow data collected on the Purgatoire River, inconsistent flow
measurements are primarily caused by the rough nature of the channel bottom and differences in
the cross section being measured. These factors influence the accuracy of the Global Flow Probe
that is used to measure stream velocity. Also, mapping.of monitoring stations is better presented
on the Regional Hydrology Map in the Permit Document (Map 8), now referenced in the AHR. The
Division should also note that Alluvial Wel] PAW-2 is not located 30 feet from Alluvial Well PAW-
1 on the southwest comer of the Waste Development Pile, but is located on the southeast comer of
the Pile to monitordowndipeffectsofthePile(approximately200yardseastofPAW-l as described
in the report). There is a second alluvial well located approximately 30 feet from PAW-1, however,
this well is not in the monitoring program.
Should you have questions or need additional information concerning this report, please do not
hesitate to le[ me know.
Sincerely,
V '~ X.~
Jerry H.
