• Cyprus OrcharYi Valley Coal Corporation operates an urdetyruurl octal acne located <br />approximately two miles north of Paonia, Colorado. The Orc3~ard Valley Mine (Fast <br />mine) has not operated since it was sealed in June, 1986, following a mine fire. <br />At that time the areal extent of the Fast mine workings was 1156 acres. During <br />July 1993, rehabilitation efforts at the portal area of the Fast mine were <br />completed arxi the mine workings of the Fast aryl West mines were connected. Only <br />the first approximately fifteen crosscuts of the Fast mine were reopened with the <br />rest of the mine remaining sealed and inactive. The existing coal processing and <br />support facilities at the Fast mine were reactivated during 1993 and are <br />currently being utilized. The support facility at the West mine remains and is <br />utilized for supplies and light maintenance activity, hvaever, coal is nai <br />transported from the mine through the Fast portals. The Orchard Valley West mine <br />• was opened in January, 1987. The areal extent of the West Mine at the end of <br />1993 was approximately 522 acres. 'Ihe canbined acreage of the Fast aryl West mine <br />workings at the close of 1993 was approximately 1678 acres. The coal mined fran <br />both the Fast and West mines is the "D" seam of the Mesaverde Coal Member. <br />Hydrologic monitoring was begun at the mines in 1983. Zhis report presents <br />monitoring results from the 1993 monitoring season. <br />Upon approval of Permit Revision 03 in the fall of 1993, several new monitoring <br />locations were added to the r~nlired npnitoring network. These locations were <br />all in the East and West Roatcap Creek drainages and encompassed the additional <br />area included in the permit as a result of the aoqu_isition and projected <br />development of federal coal lease OJC-53356. During 1993, particular e~hasis <br />was placed on monitoring those locations situated over and adjacent to areas of <br />. the mine which were recently active or which were projected to see development <br />activity during the current permit term.
