~ ~ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
STATE OF COLOR 999
Roy Romer, Gove
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Dlreetor
DATE: May 18, 1987
T0: Fred Banta and Dave Shelton -
FR014: Jim Pendleton ~••'.,C~~~'V~-
RE: ORCHARD V
I toured the Orcha~d'Valley West Portal facility in the company of
Tom Schreiner and Phil Metz of Colorado Westmoreland, Inc (CWI). CWI, in my
opinion, has done an exemplary job of completing the portal embankment, portal
cut and surface improvements with a minimum of environmental impact. Flow in
east Roatcap Creek seems unencumbered by the culvert. Monitoring has shown a
minor increase in total dissolved solids (TDS), which I suspect will decrease
through the summer. Both facial slopes of the embankment appear erosionally
and structurally stable. Erosional mats and mulch have been installed on the
embankments to assist the groin riprap and sediment fences in controlling
erosion. The Mirafi geofabric stability treatment of the access road is
working well and has dramatically limited the necessary disturbed area
adjoining the road.
Nature cooperated by providing a dry fall and a late first snow fall, but CWI
has done an excellent job of completing a complicated project in minimum time
while minimizing the necessary disturbance.
cc: Bob Liddle
Tom Schreiner
srs
9822E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
