EUGENE M. SHEARER,P.E.
CONSULTING GEOLOGIST
5720 South Jasmine Street
Englewood,CO 80111-1525
RECEIVED
(303)771-2371
25September94 OCT 1~ 1994
Mr. Bryan J. Archer
sun coal Company p,visionofMlneralsg~eology
10200 West 44th Avenue, Suite 120
Wheat Ridge, CO 80033
Dear Bryan:
The enclosed documents include: three reports on the Fall
Quarter Sedimentation Pond Inspections; three reports on the
Fall Quarter \orthwest Sediment Trap Inspection; and several
photographs of the Meadows No.l Mine area.
While in the Mine area conducting the fall inspections a
detailed inspection of the "so-called" irrigation ditch
upstream from the plant site on the south bank of the Yampa
River was conducted. The shallow ditch is overgrown by brush
and some fairly large trees that crowd the ditch banks. The
ditch is one to one and a half feet deep today. There is no
apparent indication of any construction at the upstream
terminus of the ditch that would input water from the Yampa
River. Furthermore, the ditch terminates approximately 100
to 150 feet upstream from the gravel berm constructed by Sun
Coal Company to protect installations on the south river
bank. Observations suggest that construction of the ditch
terminated prior to completion.
Enlargement of the pre-mine disturbance, 1976 vintage air
photography in this particular area shows no evidence of an
existing, operational irrigation ditch supplied with water
from the Yampa River, flowing westward to irrigate the
meadow downstream from the plant site.
Thanks for the opportunity to be of service.
Respectfully submitted,
Eugene M. Shearer,P.E.
