STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
December 9, 2002
Dennis Jones
Seneca Coal Company
P.O. Walther
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Acting Division Director
The Division has reviewed Seneca Coal Company's (BCC's) 2001 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR)
for the Yoast Mine. The frequency of data collection is incompliance with the approved monitoring
plan contained in the pemut document. The 2001 AHR was well organized and SCC did a good job
at collecting and reporting the required monitoring data.
Samples for water quality analysis could not be obtained at several monitoring locations due to low
flow or dry conditions. Wells YWCU31 and YOV29 were dry at all three attempts to obtain water
level information throughout Water Yeaz 2001 and samples for laboratory analysis could not be
obtained from either of these wells. Water quality samples were not obtained for springs YSPG6
and YSPG10 due to low flow conditions (less than 5 gallons per minute). Only field parameters
were collected at these spring locations. At surface water location YSSF3, the flow was to low to
complete the triannual sampling and field measurements could not be obtained beyond July at this
surface water site.
The Division has no further comments regazding the 2001 AHR and the report is acceptable as
submitted. No further response is required-
If you have any questions concerning the Division's review of the 2001AHR, please contact me.
Sincerely,
M ir~acQ ~?
Michael P.
