DEPARTMENTOF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, F~cecutiva Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richard D. Lamm
Governor
August 29, 1984
Mr. Rocky Bowman
West Elk Coal Company
P.O. Box 591
Somerset, Colorado 81434
Dear Mr. Bowman:
The Division has received and reviewed the plan to repair the landslide which
occurred in April, 1984. This plan was submitted to our office as requested
by Mr. Gary Takenaka, Mine Engineer. The Division approves this mitigation
plan.
The Division does have some concern about future maintenance problems
resulting from freezing. The pipes which discharge into the collection basin
may freeie thereby limiting the discharge of the interflow ground water
collected in the drain. Ice blockage may also occur. You stated that it will
be easier to monitor, maintain and correct any future problems of this surface
system. I agree that monitoring and correction will be easier, however,
maintenance may be a problem.
If maintenance is performed I believe the system should function adequately.
In the event the system becomes impractical to maintain or does not function
adequately, the entire drain system in this slide area may need to be
re-evaluted.
If you have any further questions or comments please contact me or Bob
Liddle. Enclosed is a copy of this letter for Mr. Takenaka.
Sincerely,
~~~i.,-"""-
Philip C.
