DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Davitl H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
DATE
T0:
FROM
RE:
December 15, 1983
ob Liddle
Jim Pendleton `~Y9 ~-
Mt. Gunni n No. 1 ne--Proposed Remedial Treatment of Surface
Facility Area slides
Pursuant to your request, I have reviewed the recent submittal by
West Elk Coal Company. This submittal, made in response to problem
No. 007-83-12, originally noted on the inspection report of
June 15, 1983, represents engineering plans for the remedy of six
specifically delineated landslides at the Mt. Gunnison No. 1 underground
coal mine near Somerset, Colorado. That submittal contains the
engineering plans and construction specifications being used as bid
documents, for the selection of contractors to complete the required work.
The proposed remedies include installation of interceptor subdrains,
construction of retaining walls and buttress fills, and the excavation of
excess overburden. The submittal cover letter also states that several
additional remedial efforts have already been undertaken by the operator,
including shotcrete lining of some ditches to prevent infiltration into
landslide masses, minor modification of some roadway drainage, planting
of phreatophytic trees to transpire seepage water, and the installation
of inclinometers near the portal area slide to monitor movement of that
landslide mass. It is prudent to believe that this combination of
proposed remedial techniques should stabilize the landslide masses. If
subsequent observations determine that additional work is necessary, we
can require additional remedial treatment in the future.
It is my recommendation that we approve the proposed remedial treatments
as presented in West Elk Coal Company's submittal in response to problem
No. 007-83-12. Further, we should require that the operator provide us
with a schedule for completion of the proposed remedial treatments within
90 days.
/ep
cc: Ed Bischoff
Doc.
