BOWIE RESOURCES, LTD.
17204010 Drive P.O. Box 1488 POOnlO. CO-0033685, 2ND QUARTER 1995 DISCHARGE
MONITORING REPORTS.
To Whom It May Concern: -
,Ic
(.-
Please find enclosed seven completed Dt1R forms addressing the Tst Quarter
of 1995 for NPDES Permit No. CO-0073685.
You will note that on May 12, 1995, Outfall 002A exceeded discharge
limitations. Between May 3rd and May 12th, the Bowie X1 Mine received
approximately 1.05 inches of rainfall and on Hay 12th, received and additional
1.1 inches of rain. This unusually heavy rainfall in combination with leaks
located in Pond X4's binwall and valve assembly, severely limited the retention
time necessary to meet discharge limits. It should be noted, as new owners and
operators, Bowie X1 Mine has never seen Pond A4 with as much water. Upon
discovering, Bowie Resources took action in correcting this problem.
When weather permitted, water in Pond ¢4 was pumped back up to Pond fJ so
as to allow repair work to begin on Pond X4. Repair work on pond consisted of
placing a bentonite mat along the bottom perimeter of the pond as well as along
the sides then additional material was placed over the mat and compacted. The
leaking valve assembly was then replaced with a new 12" valve and tested so to
assure a tight seal. It should be noted that the Bowie ,91 Mine continued to
receive heavy rainfall after the repair work, and no sighs of leaking were found.
In conjunction with repairing Pond !'4, sedimentation ponds located upstream were
also cleaned. By cleaning these ponds, additional storage space has been created
as well as a greater retention time.
Howie Resources Ltd. is currently exploring the possibility of rebuilding
several of these ponds so as to further minimize the potential of exceeding
discharge limits in the future.
Thirty day average values reported on the enclosed DHR's represent the
maximum thirty day average values generated for this quarter.
If you have any questions regarding this submittal please contact me at
(970)527-4135.
B/owie Resourc e/5~s Limited
'~~1~/~ Jar ~~~ ~7
William A.
