' A focused im~estigation of the Cash Mine /Gold Hill Mill Redevelopment site was conducted by
MFG and ITEC personnel during June 1998. The scope of the focused site investigation study was
' developed through discussions between ITEC and MFG and was subdivided into two basic components. The
first component included the following tasks:
' Excavation of l5 test pits at representative locations, identified jointly by ITEC and MFG personnel
and excavatecUlogged by ITEC;
' Sampling, by MFG personnel, of representative soils from the existing embankment and from the
cut area where materials for the new embankment will be obtained, for geotechnical testing and
engineering analysis;
' Sampling, by MFG personnel, of samples of tailings (disturbed and undisturbed) from the area of
the impoundment upon which the new embankment will be constructed; and
t Geotechnical laboratory testing of representative soil and tailings samples to establish engineering
characteristics.
' The second component of the focused im~estigation included the following tasks:
t Review of the geotechnical testing results and conduct of engineering analyses to develop
geotechnical recommendations for design of the proposed facilities;
' - site grading;
soil and rock excavation;
- suitable foundation conditions; and
' - fill placement.
Amore detailed description of the field investigation performed by ITEC and the geotechnical
sampling performed by MFG is presented in Appendix A. A table which summarizes the test pit information
is presented in Appendix B. The test pit and geotechnica] sample locations are shown on Drawing 5461-C I.
A detailed description of the geotechnical laboratory testing program and the laboratory test results
are included in Appendix C. Appendix D presents individual test data and individual test data sheets.
' Geotechnical laboratory test results and recommendations are presented in Section 5.0.

5
1
