HE UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK
THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
CULTURAL EDUCATION CENTER
ALBANY. NEW YORK 12230
NEW YORK STATE MUSEUM SCIENCE SERVICE BIOLOGICAL SURVEY
3 19,300
25 July 1986
Mr . Jim Crane
Real Estate/Open Space
City of Boulder
1877 Broadway
Boulder , Colorado 80306
Dear Mr . Crane:
Bill Jennings has informed me of his discovery of a population
of Spiranthes diluvialis along both sides of US 36 at South
Boulder Creek . This station is only the eleventh site at which
the species has been found. Most records are from the Great
Basin, and only three (including the new Boulder site) are from
Colorado. Most of the Great Basin stations have been destroyed
by habitat destruction, and the Boulder population is only the
fifth known presently to survive . It is, furthermore, by far the
largest known population.
Accordingly, I urge you to take this plant into account in your
land use planning, and afford it some manner of protection. Note
that this does not mean strict preservation of the area;
obviously, whatever management the area has received in the past
has been very beneficial . Indeed, this species will require
active management (most likely grazing or mowing) for the
population to be maintained at a high level.
Please feel free to call on me if you have any questions or feel
I might be of further assistance .
i
Charles J. Sheviak ,
Curator of Botany
cc -
