Shale outcrops , north of Boulder :
Physaria bellii . This early spring blooming member of the
mustard family produces the bright yellow flower clusters on
the black shale outcrops just north of the junction of
Broadway and US 36 at the north edge of town in April and
May. Also present on the outcrop in the " island" area of US
36, just north of Beech Aircraft where Neva Road diverges .
According to Weber , this species is endemic, that is, it is
known only from the Boulder area and nowhere else.
In my opinion, the city (and county) open space areas have an
abundance of endangered, rare, and unusual plants that are deserving of
protection of some kind. While most are not particularly showy and are
not really in danger from casual picking, the danger from being eaten or
trampled by cattle, trampled by hikers , or bulldozed under for
construction of trails , parking, or other park development is very real .
The location and rarity of these plants should be taken into
consideration for parks planning purposes .
Sincerely,
I
Will Jennings
