Foothills Hwy
Boulder , Colorado 80303
Dear Dick :
I have completed a careful survey of the more southerly portions of
the South Boulder Creek floodplain in sections 9 and 16, T1S, R70W ,
searching for the orchid Spiranthes diluvialis . The areas searched are
to the south (upstream) from the large concentration of orchids found
adjacent to the Turnpike. Three patches of orchids were found, and
these have been marked with flags .
The northernmost patch is in the southeast quarter of section 9,
between the trail and the creek . From the more southerly of the two
fences close together with newly erected gates (the south fence is the
center line of section 9) , walk 188 paces south on the trail , then 20
paces east , toward the creek . There are two flags , the northern one
marking two plants ; the southern one marking one plant . This site is
directly east of the Flatiron gravel operation, where the greenbelt
corridor on the floodplain is rather narrow.
The next patch is in the northeast quarter of section 16, west of
the trail and south of the Flatiron gravel operation. From the point
where the trail goes through the fence that divides sections 9 and 16,
at a newly erected gate, walk west along the fence 118 paces , then south
12 paces . There is a single plant marked with a flag at that point .
Walking further south another- 38 paces will put you in the center of a
patch of 11 plants outlined by 4 flags . Some plants are in fruit and
are hard to see.
The third colony is in the same area as the second (northeast
quarter of 16 , west of trail , south of Flatirons ) . On the trail , from a
newly erected post at trailside, about 80 paces south of the fence
dividing sections 9 and 16, walk west 131 paces . There are 16 plants
strung out along a roughly north-south line and marked by three flags .
Also checked was the area immediately to the southwest of the Open
Space Operations Center , in the area where sections 16, 179 20, and 21
join , including the pond area behind the Operations center and the
taIIarass prairie remnant to the southwest . No Spiranthes were found in
this area . The ground seems more rocky and the creek and meanders are
more entrenched than they are further downstream. The bog orchid
