Foothills Hwy
Boulder , Colorado 80303
Dear Dick :
As you have requested, I have inventoried the populations of the
rare orchid Spiranthes diluvialis in the area immediately adjacent to
U .S . highway 36 (the Denver-Boulder Turnpike) just west of South Boulder
Creek. This area is generally in the northeast quarter of section 9 ,
T1S, R70W, with a few populations across the section line in the
northwest quarter of section 10 . Three areas enclosed by fences were
inventoried : ( 1 ) an old farmstead bounded on the south by the Turnpike,
the east by South Boulder Creek, the north by South Boulder Road, and
the west by developed areas: (2) an open field bounded on the north by
the Turnpike, the east by South Boulder Creek, the south by an east-west
fence marking the center of section 9, and the west by a fence; and ( 3 )
a field to the west of area number 2 , bounded on the north by the
Turnpike, the east by a fence, the south by the east-west fence marking
the center of section 9 . and on the west by the Flatiron gravel pit.
developments .
The areas were examined closely the week of July 29-Augu5t 2 , 1986
Traverses were walked at 30 pace intervals, about 85 to 90 feet . This
distance seemed appropriate as about 40 to 50 feet was about as far as a
single plant could be discerned in the grass . Populations were counted
and their locations were plotted on a map. The base map used was drawn
at a scale of one inch to 200 feet by scaling dimensions from the USGS
Louisville 7. 5 minute quadrangle (one inch to 2000 feet) . Dimensions
were checked by pacing. Fences , ditches , trees , buildings, and other
features useable as landmarks were plotted as well .
Most of the plants are concentrated along both sides of the
Turnpike , but there is also a significant population along the north
property boundary, adjacent to South Boulder Road. Otherwise ,
populations are sparse away from the moist swales . North of the
Turnpike, 3788 plants were counted in area 1 . South of the Turnpike.
1591 plants were counted in area 2 , and 41 plants were counted in area
3. Fifteen more plants were counted near the fence. just south of area
