The storm was reported to you via
phone conversation when you were informed that the storm damaged several of the hydrologic
structures at the mine site.
The data provided in the packet is from Mrs. Linda Long who lives about 1 mile from the West
Ridge check dam locations that received most of the damage from the storm. Mrs. Long, as she
slates in her letter, is not a professional meteorologist but has in fact been monitoring weather in
the area for many years. For I 1 years Mrs. Long did report weather conditions in an official
capacity for the Mountain States Weather Service Network. For this reason I believe her
instruments and methods are accurate.
The day [hat the storm hit mine personnel report that the mine experienced a light drizzling rain
mast of the day starting early in the morning. The intense portion of the storm hit after the crew
had left for the day. In speaking with Mrs. Long she informed me that she does not feel that the
entire amount of the precipitation event was recorded because her gauge got plugged during the hail
storm portion of this event. In short we believe that the storm recorded a minimum of 2.6" of
precipitation in a shorter time than the 24 hour event criteria
Unfortunately, there is no further proof of the severity of this storm that I can provide as
documentation. The National Weather Service does not have monitoring sites in our remote
location and the storm was apparently a highly concentrated event.
Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at the Edna Mine site.
Sincerely,
David Bevedin
Resident Engineer
