COLOQ4DO <br /> COK4ENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS <br /> One or more of the following environmental hazards are posed by each of the <br /> nine mines evaluated i.r, this assessment. <br /> (1) Radioactive materials are being eroded from waste rock dumps. <br /> (2) Haters containing radioactive substances, suah as radium 226. and <br /> containing other =,Ac substances, such as arsenic and selenium, are <br /> being discharged from mine workings. <br /> (3) Contaminated avdiment and waters are migrating Waite and <br /> degrading surface water and perhaps ground water quality. <br /> (4) Radon gas and ;gamma radiation are being emitted both from mine <br /> portals and waste r.ck dumps. <br /> Remedial actions needed include: regrading and revegstating waste dumps <br /> for stability, eliminating mine portal water discharge by underground <br /> diversion and portal closure, and portal closure to eliminate radon <br /> emission from adits. <br /> Additional specific recommendations are included in the individual mine <br /> assessments. <br /> PART 1 .
