• GOLDEN EAGLE NESTING
Two golden eagle nests have been found proximate to each other on a cliff in SW ~/a SEA/a,
Section 7, TSN, R87W; less than 1000 feet from the Yoast Mine permit boundary (Exhibit 1).
The nests are in a single golden eagle territory. One of the nests was active and the other was two
and alternate in 1997. Eagles were observed incubating on the active nest in April. It is not
known how many young hatched or fledged from that nest later in the year.
Sandhill Crane Activity
In spring 1997, as in previous years, a pair of cranes was observed along drainage
bottomland in Sections 4, 8, and 9, TSN, R87W; those locations are approximately 0.25 miles
east of the Yoast haul road. Although the birds were feeding and walking together, but no
courtship displays were observed. Surveys completed in 1993 and 1996 indicated that cranes
frequented that drainage in spring, but did not nest there or anywhere else in the immediate
vicinity of Yoast. It is unlikely that any cranes nested near Yoast in 1997.

1997 Yoast Mine Wildlife Monitoring Page 8
