EASTSIDE MINE
Summary of 2000 Water Monitoring
Extent of Mining
No mining has occurred at the Eastside Mine since December 1994. The buildings and surface
facilities were removed from the minesite, the portals were sealed and surface area was regraded
in May, June and July of 1995. Eastside Coal Company requested and was granted a Phase I Bond
Release in December of 1995. In September of 1995 the disturbed area was seeded with the
approved seed mixture as listed in the approved Mining and Reclamation Permit. The area is
inspected on a quarterly basis to ensure the stormwater management plan and sediment control
system are functioning properly.
Flow and Field Parameters
The flow and field parameters of the Harvey Gap Outlet above and below the mine continue to
demonstrate the seasonal discharges from the Harvey Gap Reservoir. The Above Mine pH ranged
from 6.5 to 8.0. The Above Mine conductivity ranged from 505 to 666 microohms/cm. Above Mine
Temperature ranged from 5.0 to 21.5 degrees centigrade. The Below Mine pH ranged from 6.5 to
8.0. Below Mine conductivity ranged from 513 to 1005 microohms/cm. Below Mine temperature
ranged from 1.3 to 22.8 degrees centigrade. The Seep pH ranged from 6.5 to 8.0. Seep conductivity
ranged from 835 to 1025 microohms/cm. Seep temperature ranged from 0.2 to 18.3 degrees
centigrade. No significant deviations from the 1996-]999 field data were noted.
Chemical Parameters
The chemical parameter results of the Harvey Gap Outlet above the mine and below the mine
generally fall within the ranges established 1985-1999. Boron was not detected in any of the
samples. Floride was detected in a portion of the samples.
There was no water discharged from the four inch steel pipe installed in the portal seal from the
Eastside Mine.
Impacts on Surface and Ground Water
No discharge has occurred from sediment pond SP-1 or from the underground mine workings.
The water monitoring data are listed on the attached tables found in the Data and Statistical
Information section beginning on page 7 to and including page l2. A comparison of 2000 data with
1996-1999 data indicates no measurable impacts on ground or surface water have occurred due to
Page 3 of 17
